This publication is a superb collection of not only the development of this aircraft from Northrop “Night Fighter Works”, but as the title states, a beautiful photo chronicle (full color and black and white) of this fabulous Fifties all weather interceptor.  It includes numerous photos I have never seen published before, and is, in my opinion, well worth having in your private library.  All phases of development are covered, as is where these aircraft wound up being assigned.  For the modeler, an excellent group of cockpit photos are included.

The F-89 was described at both ends of the spectrum by those who flew it.  Some thought it was the “Cadillac” of all the fighters, while others described it as a “flying dump truck”.  Regardless of which description is more accurate, this publication is welcome as more information becomes available about these never to be forgotten cold war warriors, which are  becoming all but extinct.  Many of their missions were conducted in some downright nasty climates, as is covered in both photos and text.  National Guard assignments and test missions are also covered, along with F-89 survivors and even a poetic “Requiem for the Scorpion”, written by Major Marvin Randell, 175th F.I.S.

Again, well worth owning and available from Schiffer Publishing through their web site at www.schifferbooks.com.
