This is the latest in Midland Counties’ Red Star series, consisting of 128 pages in the usual softbound 8 1/2 by 11 format.  The subject this time around is the Myasishchev M-4 and 3M “Bison.”  The “Bison” is now best known as the first Soviet strategic jet bomber, and might be roughly compared to the B-47 in both its role and performance, though the Myasishchev design is some years younger that its Boeing cousin.  The book begins with story of Soviet strategic bombers of the 1940’s and continues right through development, service and retirement of the “Bison,” up to the present as the author unfolds the story of the extraordinary “Atlant,” the spacecraft-carrying, heavy lift version of the “Bison.”

Author Yefim Gordon has done another creditable job with this book.  It is a good read; not terribly technical, but containing a good deal of information nevertheless.  The photography is of generally high standards and there are over 200 black and white photos, as well as 28 more in color.  These include some nice detail shots for modelers.  Unlike others in the Red Star series, there are no color profiles included, although this is probably because most Bisons were natural metal overall.

This is another fine book from Midland Counties and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in modern military aviation.  Now can we have a model of this important aircraft – my plea worked with the Blackjack!!
