SBD-3 DAUNTLESS

THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY

by Capt. Daniel V. Hernandez

Heavily illustrated with some color, soft cover, 216 pages

Out of Spain from Aeronaval Publishing SL comes what appears to be Volume 1 in a new series of books covering, and when I say covering, I mean completely covering the above subject. This offering is one of the best I have seen on the Dauntless.

The prologue and a portion of the text were written by the late Lt. CDR Dick Best, USN(R), who was the commander of VB-6 (Bombing 6) aboard the Enterprise during the battle of Midway.

Historians and modelers alike will find this a “must” publication for addition to their personal libraries. The technical illustrations have been reproduced from Douglas, Wright, USN and USAAF manuals. These include an excellent set of aircraft drawings in 1/48th scale.

The historical text takes one on a day-by-day descriptive journey back in time beginning with the planning stages of the battle and turning point of the war. Beginning with the strategy of the Imperial Japanese Navy all the way through the actual battle and the subsequent days (5th and 6th of June), with a summary of events that all make for great reading.

The balance of the book is jam packed with both photos and line drawings of just about every system imaginable on the Dauntless. And yes, I just pulled out my Accurate Miniatures SBD and can’t wait to get started.

From the modeler’s standpoint, it’s just about everything one could ask for in such a publication. It seems that it was written from the scale modeler’s point of view. After finishing the book, I glanced inside the flyleaf and lo and behold, I find a personal note from Captain Dan Hernandez, a former member of IPMS/USA. That certainly takes some of the guesswork out of it!!

I, for one, look forward to more of such outstanding offerings from these good folks. The book is available at 35,00 euros (you’ll have to get your international money calculator out) direct through Aeronaval Publishing SL, P.O. Box 408 Torrent, 46900 Valencia, Spain or check their website www.aeronaval.net. IN the event more than one copy is ordered, they offer a club discount (20%) for orders totaling four (4) books.

Many thanks to Dan Hernandez for the review copy.
