Sea Harrier

The Last All British Fighter

The Sea Harrier is one of the most charismatic aircraft extant.  Unfortunately, the aircraft is set for a premature retirement on economic grounds early in 2006, leaving the British Fleet without organic fighter cover.  As the sub-title suggests, the Sea Harrier will go down in history as the last all-British fighter, as the new British carriers due to enter service sometime in the next decade will utilize the new Lockheed –Martin F-35.

Previously, those interested in the Sea Harrier could pick up a copy of “The Sharp End” by Neil Mercer and be well satisfied; though being published in 1995 the book was becoming rather dated.  Now, Jamie Hunter has woven a fine historical narrative with plenty of personal anecdote and some truly vivid photography to produce a riveting book that is bang up to date.

Hunter relies heavily on the personal reminisces of some of the leading lights in the Sea Harrier community, including John Farley, a long time British Aerospace test pilot who was heavily involved in the development of both the Harrier and Sea Harrier.  This is backed up by “war stories” from pilots involved in the Falklands War, the Balkans Conflict and the wars in the Gulf.  As I mentioned, the photography is stunning, especially in the section devoted to the F/A.2 version where Hunter has been granted permission to take part in formation photoshoots.  There is a very handy walkaround photo section on the F/A.2 for us modelers.  In addition, there are some useful appendices that tell you all you ever wanted to know about the Sea Harrier, making this “the” book about the Sea Harrier and a fine tribute in the twilight of its service life.

This is perhaps the best book I have read all year. Well written, informative, excellent photography and a really cool airplane!  This book offers excellent value for anyone with an interest in naval aviation, and I can heartily recommend it.
