Fifth in a growing series of Luftwaffe publications, Volume Five covers the growth and development of the Ju-87 Sturzkampfflugzeug (dive bomber), or Stuka.  Like the previous four editions of the Black Cross series, this book is full of comprehensive text, drawings, and best of all, photos. All in all, 92 pages of them.  Published in soft cover, this 8.50 x 11.0 inch tome is a tremendous reference for anyone interested in the Stuka.  Chapter by chapter, here’s what is inside:

  • An Idea Becomes a Reality
  • A Monocoque Stuka: The Ju 87 Design
  • From Test Prototypes to Series Production
  • On Special Operations: The Ju 87 as a Medical Test Aircraft
  • Art & Media: The Ju 87 as a Propaganda Wagon
  • Aerial Phalanxes: The Ju 87 In Front Line Service
  • Building The Ju 87: A Miscellany For The Modeller
  • Select Bibliography
  • 135 Black & White Photos
  • 12 Color Photos
  • 52 Line Drawings & Graphs
  • 9 tables
  • 2 Watercolor Painting Reproductions
  • 1  Full page Color Cutaway Drawing

Overall, this is an outstanding reference book.  Luftwaffe modelers, aviation aficionados, history mavens, and people who really enjoy technical stuff will find this book incredibly useful.  I personally found the chapter on early aerospace medicine investigation very interesting, but with an admitted bias.  The last chapter, regarding modeling, is more in-depth than one would expect, and even touches upon card models with a nice example.  Everything in between is fantastic as well, with rarely-seen photos many of which I’d never seen before.

This book comes highly recommended!  Sincere thanks go out to John Noack, 1st VP IPMS/USA & the folks at Specialty Press.
