If you are looking for inspiration for the wonderful Luftwaffe ’46 models coming out of Revell Germany this book is it.

This book is the third in a series covering the development of German aircraft at the end of World War II.  This particular book focuses on the Schlachtflieger evolution from World War I until the end of the Second World War.  Aircraft that were used in combat and the ones that were on the drawing board at the end of the war are included with wonderful color renditions.  140 of the evolutionary, as well as, revolutionary aircraft are represented.  When possible photos of actual aircraft, wind tunnel models, and full-scale mockups are included.  Every aircraft is depicted with hypothetical paint and markings.  The drawings bring the aircraft to life and add a nice touch of realism to the aircraft.  The text explains the design and progress of each aircraft.  Some aircraft only made the drawing board, while others made the full stage wooden mock-up, still others were in construction with others making first flights and some being destroyed at wars end.

Chapters are devoted to Mistels, airborne weapons and special equipment too.  Seeing the rearward shooting flame thrower in action is cool.  Who would have ever thought of such a contraption?  For that matter, who would have thought of most of these aircraft?  Only the fore thinking minds of the German engineers who despite a deteriorating economy and war situation tried to save their country with the only thing they could contribute, their innovative aircraft design.

I highly recommend this book, especially for the Luftwaffe ’46 buff.  In conjunction with the other two volumes, these books offer the modeler a comprehensive listing of the hypothetical Luftwaffe.
