Hot on the heels of the Trumpeter release of the 1/48 and 1/72 scale RA-5C Vigilantes is No. 64 in the Naval Fighter Series from Steve Ginter.  This soft cover book contains 164 pages of information and pictures about these two types of planes.  This volume covers the development and the teething problems this plane had, as well as its many “firsts”, including the first production use of a HUD, and variable geometry inlet ramps.  The single seat and two seat versions are completely described, and backed up with plenty of pictures.

As a modeler, one of the things I look for in a book is detail pictures and explanations of those details and variants and this book delivers in spades.  There are excellent pictures and drawings showing external and internal detail.  This includes great pictures of the landing gear, cockpit and the sensors stations.  There are more than 30 pages of detail and pictures on the cockpit alone!  The back cover contains detail of the materials of construction for the plane so you can do weathering.  There is also a weapons section.

Also included are many in-use photos of deployed Vigilantes.  There are some great shots of Viggies with their wings folded as well as in-flight photos.  There is also a shot of the RVAH-11 Checkertails which were onboard the USS Forrestal when it burned.  You’ll find pictures of the flight deck as well as one of a RA-5C being pushed over the side due to fire damage.

You can probably tell that I think this is a great book and it is.  Lots of detail and pictures are combined with a well-written text.  I heartily recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Naval Aviation, and to all modelers looking to detail their Vigilante.  My thanks go to Steve Ginter for supplying the book and John Noack for the chance to review it.  Now where did my Trumpeter kit get off to?
