GERMAN AIRCRAFT COCKPITS 1911-1970

By Peter W. Cohausz

 Reviewed By Ed Kinney #2989

The latest in a seemingly endless line of excellent reference books from Schiffer is a comprehensive 303 page offering loaded with color and black and white photos and line drawings. It begins with an overview of the introduction to the science of instruments, the panel and the operating conditions under which they were used.

Not only are the flight instruments covered, but engine instruments as well. I found this a most interesting read as a 40 year pilot and brought the expression “we’ve come a long way baby!” to mind. Also covered were the early methods of navigation, gyros and even autopilot systems.

The next 270 or so pages covers just about everything from the Pre-WWI Rumpler Taube through World Wars I and II, as well as some of the developments after 1945. The book also includes coverage of some gliders.

Looking for cockpit details on a Fokker E III or a Halberstadt CL IV? The’re in there! Or perhaps a FW-44 Steiglitz ? …it’s there too. Most of the fighters, bombers and some civil aircraft are also covered.

Whether you are a modeler (an invaluable reference source) or an aviation history buff, you’re bound to find a few things never before published, making this book a welcome addition to any library. The color shots along in my opinion are worth the price of admission. Available from Schiffer Publishing, LTD., 4880 Lower Valley Road, Atglen, Pa. 19310 or www.Schifferbooks.com - $ 69.95 USD
