MiG-21 bis "Fishbed L/N"

Reviewed By Bob Ulrich #35901

This slim monograph is devoted to the ‘bis’ (improved) variant of the venerable MiG-21 line of fighters.  The text is in Polish, but all of the numerous photographs have captions in both Polish and English.  This practice is also followed for the line drawings, profiles and technical data tables.  A brief summary of the text is provided in English, but I was disappointed that the extensive modelers section at the back of the book offered no English translation.

That aside, the book offers a fine selection of mostly black and white photos, along with four pages of color photos.  The inside front cover, and both sides of the rear cover are devoted to nicely executed color profiles of the MiG-21 in the liveries of some of the many nations which flew the Fishbed.  The illustrations also include a selection of line drawings which detail the differences among the MiG-21bis variants.  Many of the photographs are detail shots of cockpits, landing gear, ordnance, and airframe details.  If you are interested in super detailing a model you will be disappointed in these, as they are a bit small and far from comprehensive.  But as a general guide to what the different areas look like and their colors the selection will do nicely.

The MiG-21, with its sexy shape and seemingly endless variety of paint schemes and markings, is a fascinating subject for the modeler.  If you are a MiG fan you will buy this book as matter of course, but it is also quite useful to those with a more casual interest who may wish for an inexpensive reference.  Recommended.
